Fingertip Patch Tracks Medication Levels In Parkinson's Patients

It’s tough to home in on the right dose of drugs for Parkinson’s disease patients.

Too little levodopa — the gold-standard drug for the disease — will leave patients unable to move, while too much triggers severe, uncontrollable jerking motions, researchers said.

But help could be on the way, in the form of a fingertip patch that uses a patient’s sweat to track their medication levels.

The soft fingertip patch requires no batteries to track chemical levels in sweat, and its measurements in early testing were comparable to those obtained by standard lab blood tests, researchers said.

“Overall, our easy-to-use, energy-efficient wearable supports real-time, stimulation-free monitoring, potentially enabling at-home dosage adjustments,” wrote the research team led by Tamoghna Saha, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego.

Currently, doctors have to rely on patient diaries to adjust doses of levodopa, researchers said. The problem is that as the disease progresses, the window of the drug’s effectiveness grows more and more narrow, keeping doctors on their back foot as they try to get the correct doses applied at the right time.

A person’s fingertip is packed with a high density of sweat glands, researchers said in background notes.

The experimental patch is equipped with a specially engineered absorbent gel that acts as a sweat sponge, researchers said. The gel contains a high concentration of salts, and draws sweat out of pores since water naturally flows toward areas heavier in salt.

Levodopa in the patient’s sweat triggers a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with enzymes embedded in the patch, researchers said. That reaction generates a small, measurable voltage that powers the patch and also serves as an indicator of the person’s levodopa levels.

In clinical tests, the patch tracked levodopa levels as accurately as standard blood tests among both healthy volunteers and people with Parkinson’s disease, the study says.

Results also showed that people with Parkinson’s clear levodopa from their systems significantly faster than healthy people, explaining why their symptoms can deteriorate so suddenly when dosing is off.

Eventually, the patch could be paired with a pump that would automatically deliver precise doses of levodopa right when a person needs it, researchers said.

The new study appeared recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
